The Commissioner's Word

“In the second year, the four shall return to the high plains, and the air shall be thin, and the drivers shall be loud. The defending champion carries the weight of the Chalice; the runner-up carries a grudge measured in strokes. One among you has not paid. The Commissioner sees all. Let the record show that mercy was available in September and no one asked for it.”

Two-Player Scramble

At a glance

Two-player teams play one ball: pick the better shot every time.

Two-player teams, one ball. Both hit, the pair picks the better shot, and both play from there until the ball is in the hole. One team score per hole, one team handicap, and the strokes belong to the team, not to either player.

How to play

  • Both players hit; the team chooses the better ball and both play from that spot.
  • Repeat until the ball is holed. One team score per hole.

Scoring

  • The team's handicap is 35% of the lower handicap plus 15% of the higher, rounded to a whole number.
  • The lower team plays off scratch; the other team gets the difference, on the card's hardest holes.

The one rule

  • Strokes are the team's, never one player's — nobody on a scramble side gets strokes of their own.

Four-Ball

At a glance

Two-player teams, own balls, and the best score from each pair goes head to head.

Two-player teams, everyone plays their own ball, and on each hole the better score from your pair goes up against the better score from theirs. Partners cover for each other, which is the whole charm — one of you can gamble while the other plays boring, responsible golf. The format the Ryder Cup reaches for when it wants fireworks.

How to play

  • Split into two-player teams.
  • Everyone plays their own ball.

Scoring

  • On each hole the better score from your pair meets the better score from theirs.

Win holes, not strokes.

Head to head, hole by hole: lowest score wins the hole, and the match is decided by holes won, not total strokes. Every hole is its own little war, and nothing in golf feels better than closing an opponent out with three to play.

Short game so clinical it should require malpractice insurance. Lost Edition I on the 54th hole and has been at the practice green preparing his response. Speaks softly. Putts loudly.

Four Players Enter

Marcus Whitfield

“Big Cat”

Defending Champion

Won Edition I by two strokes and has mentioned it, conservatively, four hundred times since. Plays a power fade he calls intentional. Arrives with the Chalice in a padded case he bought specifically for it.

Dane Okafor

“The Surgeon”

Runner-Up, Edition I

Short game so clinical it should require malpractice insurance. Lost Edition I on the 54th hole and has been at the practice green preparing his response. Speaks softly. Putts loudly.

Pat Lindqvist

“Boomer”

Longest Drive, Shortest Temper

Holds the tournament record for longest drive (341 yards) and most balls lost in a single round (11, same round). A streaky genius. His wedge has been thrown farther than most men can hit one.

Jimmy Castellano

“The Rook”

First-Year Invitee

Elevated from the waiting list after a rigorous vetting process (he owns a minivan and asked nicely). Claims a 14 handicap that no one has independently verified. The Commissioner is watching, Jimmy.

Side Action

The Games

Skins

Standard skins, $20 buy-in per round. Carryovers ride. Validation on the following hole is not required because we are not cowards.

Wolf

Rotating wolf order set by tee-time draw. Lone wolf pays or collects double. Howling is encouraged but not scored.

The Boomerang

Any player who hits a tree and lands back in the fairway collects one dollar from the field and full diplomatic immunity for the hole. Named for Pat. Obviously.

The Commissioner's Bounty

A sealed side bet revealed on the first tee of the final round. Terms are final, arbitrary, and historically unkind to Jimmy.

Two-Player Scramble

Two-player teams play one ball: pick the better shot every time.

  • FormatRound One — The Opening Procession

The rule they forget
Strokes are the team's, never one player's — nobody on a scramble side gets strokes of their own.

Two-player teams, one ball. Both hit, the pair picks the better shot, and both play from there until the ball is in the hole. One team score per hole, one team handicap, and the strokes belong to the team, not to either player.

Four-Ball

Two-player teams, own balls, and the best score from each pair goes head to head.

  • FormatRound Two — The Saturday Reckoning

How to play

  • Split into two-player teams.
  • Everyone plays their own ball.

Scoring

  • On each hole the better score from your pair meets the better score from theirs.

Match Play

Win holes, not strokes.

  • FormatFinal Round — The Coronation

How to play

  • Head to head, hole by hole.

Scoring

  • Lowest score wins the hole.
  • The match goes to whoever wins more holes, not the lower total.

The rule they forget
A blowup hole costs exactly one hole, no matter how ugly it gets.

Head to head, hole by hole: lowest score wins the hole, and the match is decided by holes won, not total strokes. A blowup hole costs exactly one hole no matter how ugly it gets, so there's always a way back. Every hole is its own little war, and nothing in golf feels better than closing an opponent out with three to play.
